Migraines—Researchers Look into Colored Light for Answers

Migraines are a very common health condition that makes it difficult for a sufferer to carry out even the simplest of daily activities. In fact, most people when experiencing a migraine retire to a dark room to recover, sometimes for hours.

If you suffer from migraines, you probably understand why. Bright light is often difficult to bear since, besides the head pain, sensitivities to sounds and light are common symptoms of a migraine. However, researchers at Harvard are experimenting with certain colors of light and their effect on patients.

Light Research

Four different colors of light were involved in a recent migraine study—green, amber, red, and blue. These colors of light were shown to migraine patients in a dark room while experiencing an attack. The results were intriguing. Red and blue lights triggered major brain signals and made headaches feel worse. Green lights triggered minimal brain signals and had a calming effect on patients.

Upper Cervical Chiropractic and Your Brainstem

At Upper Cervical of Sioux Falls, we use the Blair technique of upper cervical chiropractic to get the uppermost bones of the neck in proper alignment. This is a vital step in the battle against migraines because the C1 vertebra protects the brainstem. A misalignment can put pressure on the brainstem and restrict blood and cerebrospinal fluid flow. As a result, pressure can build up, and brain-body communication can be interfered with. Migraines are just one of many resulting symptoms when something keeps the brainstem from functioning properly.

By means of specific diagnostic procedures and adjustments, we work to get the upper cervical spine back to where it needs to be. Fluid flow and communication are restored, thus allowing the body to function normally. In turn, many patients find that migraines become a thing of the past. I encourage anyone who is experiencing migraines to come in for a consultation to see if upper cervical care is the natural relief option for you.
