Vertigo / Dizziness

First Blood Test for Vertigo Being Developed

Blood tests are a common way to diagnose various medical conditions. However, there has never been a blood test that could identify spinning before. Researchers at UConn Health have recently discovered a particular protein in the blood that can be used as an indicator of vertigo. That means if testing goes well, just such a test may be available in the future.

What Is Involved in a Vertigo Diagnosis?

Right now, diagnosing vertigo usually means a patient will be subjected to a number of imaging tests, most of which are really unnecessary. This adds to the expense of the condition. Also, relief options are fairly limited for spinning.

Vertigo—More Common for the Elderly

As a person ages, spinning becomes more common. That is why about 40% of patients over 40 will experience this spinning feeling. The issue gets even worse for senior citizens. It’s no wonder that 1 in 3 Americans over the age of 65 falls each year.

Caring for Vertigo Sufferers

Most doctors treat this as an ear condition. As a result, medications prescribed are focused on this location. The patient may also be given certain positions of the head for when an attack starts. These positions attempt to reset the position of crystals in the inner ear that help the body determine location.

However, research reveals that many cases of spinning actually go back to a misalignment of the upper cervical spine. That is why so many case studies exist that reveal the benefits of upper cervical chiropractic care for reducing the severity of vertigo and even for eliminating vertigo completely.

At Upper Cervical of Sioux Falls, we use the Blair upper cervical technique to correct misalignments using a low force adjustment. The result is a long-lasting correction that gives the body time to heal.
